Recently, while visiting my parents, I needed to get a key made. Since Home Depot was the closest place, I went in and found a sales associate. I didn’t know where the right department was, so I asked.
Do you know the response I got?
“So what do you want me to do about it?”
To say my husband and I were shocked is an understatement. Could you imagine saying that to one of your customers?
The experience made me think of committing to excellence in your business. Before you can commit to excellence, you need to understand what the term really means.
“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit.” — Aristotle
It’s easy to see that excellence is a habit. Habits can be formed. As a matter of fact I’ve read that if you perform a task for three weeks it then becomes a habit.
The best way to create a new habit is by setting new goals and creating a plan to achieve them. The number one thing you need to do is define your reasons for wanting to commit to excellence. Do you want to excel in your business or family life? Do you want to commit to excellence when it comes to customer service?
If you are committed to excellence in your business there are four ways you can so it:
- Give more value
- Over deliver
- Finish the work ahead of schedule
- Add in a bonus
Customer service is an area where you can offer excellence and over deliver. To me that’s one of the most important areas in your business. Give poor customer service and people will never come back. Worse yet, they will tell others about their bad experience.
Make sure you have a great customer service center, whether online or offline. It is very easy to set up an online help desk. If you are a solopreneur make sure you have your customer service skills sharpened so you can handle this aspect of your business. By delivering quality customer service to your clients and your customers, you can easily provide excellence. Always respond to issues in a timely fashion. Although you may be tempted to, never lose your cool regardless of the situation.
In order to excel in your life you need to put your best foot forward. If you do this in a consistent manner, you will have that aura of excellence surrounding you. It will make people stand up and notice you and view you as someone they want to do business with.
How do you commit to excellence in your buisness?
