What kind of people are you attracting?
Are you attracting the kind of people you want to work with? Or the contractors you want working for you?
When writing on your website, twitter, help wanted ads, whatever it may be; it’s important to write for the people you want to read it. If you have everything written in very professional language with a very professional website, those are the sort of people that will be attracted to your ad, or website etc. To attract clients like that you need to write for them. They wont be comforted or willing to work with someone who has whimsical characters dancing on the website or jokes in their ads.
However it goes the other way as well. If you are looking for someone with a sense of humor who is laid back, you should portray that in the writing so that they are more apt to continue reading and respond to it, or contact you. Put in a joke and show your personality to attract like minded people.
Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through in whatever it is you do. The reality is, we tend to work better with like minded people and there is nothing wrong with that. The likelihood is that it will be a much better experience for everyone involved if you are up front with the way you do business and handle interactions. The sooner the client or employee figures that out, the sooner each of you will know if its a good fit.
That doesn’t mean that if a client asks for more communication or wants and update, you should dump them. Or if a contractor needs more clarification you should fire them. Use your judgement, compromise is always a very real quality that everyone needs to give into.
However, it does mean: don’t pretend to be something you’re not. Be upfront and honest with yourself and the people you are working with and allow yourself to attract the people you want to be working with.
