NEWS AND INSIGHTS UPDATE:
Are there certain personal characteristics that successful women entrepreneurs and business owners share? The answer is “yes” according to Marsha Firestone, Ph.D., President and Founder of Women Presidents’ Organization (follow the link to read some of Marsha’s articles here on Women on Business).
Marsha offers four key personal characteristics of successful women entrepreneurs that were recently published by SME Toolkit:
- Successful women entrepreneurs make things happen.
- Successful women entrepreneurs are driven and confident.
- Successful women entrepreneurs are intelligent and innovative, but not “A” students.
- Successful women entrepreneurs are big dreamers.
Do you have the traits of a successful woman entrepreneur? What traits would you add to this list?
Marsha also identifies what she believes is one of the biggest obstacles to women entrepreneurs–a lack of venture capital funding. She explains:
“Recent research by the Small Business Administration (SBA) shows that the proportion of funds received by women-owned businesses as compared to their male counterparts remains extremely small. This lack of venture capital funding is a situation that needs to be rectified. America’s growing segment of women business owners makes a significant contribution to the national economy. According to the Center for Women’s Business Research, 10.6 million firms are at least half owned by a woman or women. These firms employ 19.1 million people and generate nearly $2.5 trillion in sales. The last thing anyone wants is to have this vital segment of our economy held back because of lack of venture capital support.”

I think another characteristic of successful women entrepreneurs is that they are motivated to fix problems or challenges they encounter.
