NEWS AND INSIGHTS UPDATE:
Business women might be just as qualified or more qualified than their male colleagues, but they’re not as good at making sure everyone around them knows it. That’s because women are far less likely to discuss their achievements than men are.
Instead of self-promoting, women typically downplay their achievements and hype teamwork. If you want to get ahead in the business world, you need to realize that modesty is one of your worst enemies.
A survey of Australia’s top business women by Telstra found that 92% of the most successful business women put more value on teamwork than on their individual achievements. That’s great, but guess what happens when it comes time for promotions?
As Deborah Robinson of Australian Women Online explains, a heavy focus on teamwork without taking credit for your own part in achievements can lead people to think, “She’s a great team player but what we really need is a stand-out leader.”
It’s not enough to work hard and expect others to notice your efforts and accomplishments. Instead, it’s up to you to make sure they notice and understand what you’ve done and how great you are.
In the business world, modesty will get you nowhere.
