Human resources is often perceived as one of the most female-friendly departments of any large company, but that assumption isn’t as accurate as you might think.
According to research from Korn/Ferry International, which tracks career movement in its database of 500 chief human resources officers (CHROs), men dominate HR leadership roles at Fortune 500 companies. In fact, 58% of CHROs are male.
In an emailed press release, Korn/Ferry International explained:
“Forty years ago, HR was considered mostly an administrative function. For that reason, many women would often be promoted from secretaries to human resource professionals — supporting the myth that women dominate the top ranks of HR. An even bigger myth is that HR is a leader in gender diversity in the C-suite.”
