When I was little, my dad used to take me fishing at least once per month. We lived near a nice sized lake that made fishing an easy hobby to have.
I’ll never forget the first time I looked into this white barrel filled with swirly things.
Ewww, I used to think to myself. Those things stink. And they’re all squishy.
While I never said a word to my dad, he could tell by my raisin-like expression that I was disgusted. He laughed at me and said “That’s the bait, Shay. Without them, I can’t get no fish.”
And so it is with customers. You have to have the right bait to wheel them in.
This is also known as lead generation.
There are few ways you can do this.
Offer Great Bait
The most basic thing any solo-preneur can do is to have a box on their website where people can sign up for your mailing list. If you look at my site, it’s designed to get you to sign up. But you’re not just signing up because you think I’m awesome. You’re signing up to receive a 60 minute video tutorial on how to get more customers fast.
My bait is the video tutorial. And based on the number of people that opt-in to my subscribers list every day, it’s pretty good bait.
What business owner doesn’t want more customers?
So the basic thing you must do on your website is offer something for free and make people sign up to get it. I’ve built many subscriber lists—in different niches—just with that method.
But let’s say you have a hard time getting traffic to your site. Maybe your site doesn’t get many visitors per day yet. That’s okay.
Here’s another option.
Host a Free Workshop
Give it an irresistible title, send out a press release to your local media, advertise with some local organizations, and get some butts in seats. The workshop can last about 45 minutes to an hour. At the end, you can pitch people a product or service you’re selling.
The other way to do the free information workshop is to partner up with someone who is in an industry that complements yours but isn’t directly competing.
For example a yoga instructor can pair up with a juicing expert and host a free information workshop called Disease Free Living: How to Prevent Diseases From Happening & Heal The Ones You’ve Got. Both would promote the workshop to their business circles, send out a news release to the media, and get as many people possible to sign up and attend. At the end of the workshop, they can pitch a group class that the two of them will do together or they can pitch their individual services.
Information workshops in any form are an awesome way to “get your name out there” rather quickly. The fact that it’s free lowers people’s guards so they’re more likely to attend. The great thing about this is even if you don’t make one sale, you will have people who are interested enough to sign up for your weekly newsletter. I did this a few times and ended up with 80-100 people on my list with 1 event.
If you’re an internet marketer and you’re trying to build a subscribers list fast and you have no one you can joint venture with, this is a great way to get a ton of people. Why? Because your competition isn’t doing this!
Plus, people like to know who you are. They like to know you’re a real person. That’s why in all of my sales letters I put my office phone number. I can’t tell you how many people have actually called me just wanting to confirm that I was real! If you’re an internet marketer, being accessible like that could help you push past your competitors in a quick fast and hurry.
Want six figures? Take this step seriously and you can get it.

Shay, that’s a better presentation of the strategy to generate leads and start penetrating the market.
