Today, with all the tablets, phones, and electronic devices, you might think children have it better than we did growing up.
I don’t know about you, but I loved playing with the Etch A Sketch. I made all kinds of designs and spent hours playing with it. What I didn’t realize back then was that I was using my creativity. This “device” was helping me broaden my possibilities.
Did you know Etch A Sketch turns 55 this month!
As we train our children to be entrepreneurs like ourselves we need to look for ways to help them display that creativity. That can come in the form of electronic devices, but we can’t forget the good old paper and crayon activities or coloring books. These activities wind up being cornerstones to our creativity.
What about Today as Adults?
Do you have a hobby? Having a hobby or an interest can be the perfect way to stimulate your brain and increase activity.
Your brain requires exercise like any muscle in your body. I know my mother loves doing crossword puzzles because she feels it keeps her mind active. Especially after having a stroke, she wanted that stimulation.
There are a number of activities you can do to help your mind and your body. For example, you might take up yoga, golfing, water aerobics, biking, etc. These activities and others keep the mind going and the body active.
If you aren’t into any type of sports, walking on a regular basis can help your creativity. How? Just think of the beauty that surrounds you. How does that relate to your life, your business? I know I find all kinds of lessons from the things that surround me. They wind up being the basis for many of my speeches, chapters in books, coaching sessions, and articles I write.
It’s been shown that your surroundings do have a large impact on your creativity levels.
Lighting
It’s amazing what you can find out by doing research. For example, low lighting levels make you feel more free and helps reduce stressful feelings. Dim light is best for creativity. Researchers have found that dark lighting makes you feel free. Why not try this and see what happens to your creativity levels.
Colors
Many years ago I took a course on colors and how they affect us. The best colors for improving creativity are blue and green. When you look up into the sky, you stimulate your creativity. You don’t have to be totally surrounded by color, but just a hint can make all the difference in the world.
One of the reasons I chose my office space was because I can get a great view of the blue sky, the trees, and the green grass. That helps me with my creativity.
Clutter
This is huge for many entrepreneurs and large corporations. The dreaded cluttered desk. Working in a messy or cluttered room can actually help you become more creative. What? Did I write that correctly? Yes, I did. Have you ever heard someone say they work better with a cluttered desk? For some that may be true.
The thinking behind this is that the clutter draws your attention to new details that you may not have noticed before. It in turn stimulates your creativity. That may be true, but I still like an uncluttered room. For me it works better.
If you feel like your creative juices aren’t flowing, take out an old Etch A Sketch or try one of the items from above. You might be surprised at what sparks new ideas and empowers you to make changes.
