Growing up, Daymond didn’t see heroes. He saw drug addicts. That’s what it was like growing up in Hollis Queens, NY. There weren’t any role models for being an entrepreneur. As a matter of fact, your life was supposed to consist of getting a job and working hard for someone else. You didn’t dream of being your own boss.
According to Daymond, in an interview with CNBC, the first book he ever read was Think and Grow Rich, which was written in 1937 by Napoleon Hill. I’ve read the book. Have you? One particular quote I remember from the book is, “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”
Daymond remembers this quote from the book, “If the thing you wish to do is right, and you believe in it, go ahead and do it! Put your dream across, and never mind what ‘they’ say if you meet with temporary defeat, for ‘they,’ perhaps, do not know that EVERY FAILURE BRINGS WITH IT THE SEED OF AN EQUIVALENT SUCCESS.”
This was advice that Daymond built his brand on. Daymond John is the founder of the hip-hop culture clothing line Fubu. If you’ve watched episodes of Shark Tank, then you know Daymond John.
What does this have to do with your business?
It doesn’t matter where you grew up. Imagine if Daymond limited himself to what he could and couldn’t do. Would he have a $6 billion company?
What’s limiting you? Is it a lack of education? Maybe it’s a skill set you need to learn.
For Daymond, reading Think and Grow Rich 20 times was an inspiration to him. He was gaining knowledge from the book that he could use in life. What book could you read to educate yourself?
If there isn’t a book that you feel could help you, could you write one? Imagine how you’d be helping other people. Think of the impact you could have on someone’s life by sharing your knowledge and expertise in a book written by you! Having written and published three books with number four in the works, I know how powerful a book can be to the reader.
Now, I know there are all kinds of objections you have for writing your own book from, “What would I say?” to, “Who am I to write a book?” among other things. Put all that aside and think of the impact you may have on people. What you know and your life’s experiences can have the power to help others make real changes in their lives.
For some, it’s about writing a book to delight and entertain. For others, it’s about documenting their family history. Then there are those who have a skill or knowledge that needs to be shared in a way only they can.
What about you? Are you ready to write a book?
