Is your job boring you so much that it’s affecting your performance at work and your life at home? If you’ve lost your passion for your job, then the simple tasks you used to gladly do on a daily basis can become emotionally and physically draining. Those negative feelings can affect your relationships at work and at home. They can also affect your health and your overall happiness. Is it time for you to make a change?
The truth is feeling bored in your job means you’ll start to feel unfulfilled over time. You’ll lose your motivation and might even fall into a state of depression. Depression affects 10% to 25% of American women during their lifetimes, and it’s very likely that job boredom contributes to those feelings. If you’re feeling unmotivated, depressed, angry, bitter, or just plain negative about your job, then it might be time to re-evaluate your current position and your career goals. In other words, it might be time for a change!
If you’re experiencing any of the five signs described below, consider rethinking just how long you truly want to stay in your current job:
1. You Dread Going to Work on Monday When It’s Only Saturday
It’s Saturday morning and you wake up to start your weekend. The sun is shining and life is great! Wait… you just remembered you have to go back to work on Monday. And now you’re depressed. You’re instantly in a bad mood and it lasts all weekend. In other words, you can’t enjoy your weekend because you’re too busy dreading going back to work on Monday. If that sounds like you, then you’re either bored or miserable due to another reason. Either way, it’s probably time for a job change.
2. You Let Yourself Get Distracted — Often
We all get distracted by an occasional Facebook post or text message. Heck! We’re not working machines! However, if you’re letting those distractions take up more and more of your time each day, then you need to think about why you’re watching YouTube instead of working. Could it be that you need a different job that inspires you again?
3. Everything Annoys You
Your coworkers, your work assignments, the sound of your phone ringing, the smells coming from the office kitchen, the commute, the time of a meeting …. if the list of things that annoy you at work has grown significantly, then you’re probably not happy at your job. Start brushing up your resume!
4. You Avoid Doing Tasks You Didn’t Mind in the Past
Every employee has specific tasks that they’re required to do as part of their job responsibilities that they don’t like. However, if you start disliking tasks that never bothered you in the past and take actions to avoid doing them, then those tasks are either boring you or becoming intolerable for another reason. Either way, if you’re avoiding doing your job, that’s not a good sign. It could be time to find a new job with responsibilities you don’t mind.
5. You’re Less Engaged at Work and at Home
When one part of a person’s life isn’t going great, the emotional issues that go with the problem area typically carry over into other parts of the person’s life. Has that been happening to you? Are you saying no more often when your coworkers as you to go to lunch? Are you talking to your friends less frequently? Are you staying home or sleeping more than usual? Withdrawing from social activities is a sign that you’re not happy. If your job is the cause, take steps to change it!
