Employees do call in sick because they are truly under the weather. However, many people also take sick time off due to other factors. Sometime, just becuase they do not want to go to work that day. To ebb this pattern, managers need to communicate with their employees and make sure the work environment is open, alive and vibrant. If it is, sick time will decline, employees will be highly productive and morale will be high despite difficult situations or harsh deadlines.
I was lucky enough to consult for an organization for a long period of time and after observing was able to implement proven techniques to impact change. For example the year prior to the changes, 3,973 sick leave hours were used. In the year following the changes, only 2,922 sick leave hours were used, a 36 percent decrease, year-over-year. With an average salary of more than $100,000 per year, the organization saved a tremendous amount of money simply by having its leaders spend more time communicating with their employees.
Focusing on the leadership team and addressing what is not working there. When those issues are addressed, expectations and culture change within the organization will be organic and sustainable, and counterproductive practices – like sick leave – will start to decline.
The management team is the gateway into the organization. If the leaders of the team are not able to communicate and guide the employees onto a path of productivity, the core of the business will suffer, and revenue will be lost due to the staff using their paid sick leave primarily because they don’t have loyalty to their organization or feel part of the team.
