February 8, 2012 (ROCKVILLE, Md.) – – – The Associate Executive Director of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, Bernadette Loftus, MD, has been named a member of the Board of Directors of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA). Her three-year term started in January.
Dr. Loftus brings extensive knowledge and experience to the AMGA Board with over 20 years of experience with The Permanente Medical Group, serving in multiple positions such as assistant chief, Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery and physician in chief, Santa Clara Medical Center in Santa Clara, Ca; and she has served in various positions on The Permanente Medical Group Board of Directors including director, assistant secretary, and a member of three Board committees.
In her current role as Associate Medical Director of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, Dr. Loftus partners with the President of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States, Inc., to administer the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program to approximately 500,000 members in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Since assuming her role in 2009, Dr. Loftus has hired more than 300 Permanente expert physicians and has led significant improvements in Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States’ HEDIS and CAHPS measures. In 2011, Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States was the highest scoring HMO Plan according to the Maryland Health Care Commission’s Health Benefit Plan Performance Report.
An active participate in community services, Dr. Loftus currently serves as Commissioner of Health Services Cost Review Commission, State of Maryland; is on the Board of Directors for The JW House Foundation in California; and, until recently, was a member of the Research Advisory Board of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Alexandria, Virginia.
Dr. Loftus earned her BA and graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. She received her MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland (with honors) and did preliminary general surgery residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery residency at Columbia University in New York, where she was also appointed Chief Resident in Head and Neck Surgery.
