Women entrepreneurship is now a common phrase, but early in this century, women just started to get their basic rights.
Slowly women came into the workforce and the field of business. At the end of 1940s, women became more involved in corporate and industrial work, but with the evolution of internet use and accessibility of social media, the nature of women’s work has boomed. More women are in business now than ever.
Just look at me as an example. I was just a housewife and a mom of two kids. I never imagined I’d become the business woman that I am today, but I am so proud of myself for choosing to walk on this path. It was like coming out from a shell.
However, I couldn’t have achieved what I have without proper team communications because it’s so important for a startup company’s successful progress.
When I started my company, I had only seven employees. Within a few months, my team extended to 19 members. Obviously, the communication strategy between seven employees and communication strategy between 19 employees can’t be the same.
With a team of seven people, I organized in-person meetings to distribute ideas and get feedback. For a larger team, I could’nt keep up my old strategy. I continued to make consistent contact to my old employees through- phone calls, Skype call, and Viber message, but I was creating a communication gap with my new employees. As a result, when I started delegating projects and tasks, I was receiving different outcomes of the team.
I really could not leave the old habits of avoiding people but I also didn’t have time to schedule more talks and chats. Again, I want to mention that it’s completely impossible for me contact each and every employee individually, so I have started a new strategy for this. I promised myself—no matter what—I must ensure that I am giving proper time to my team even when I am not physically present at my office.
I realized that I had to make myself more social.
I allocated three hours of Skype meeting time for my team every weekend. If my employees are stuck in any of their work or if they face any problem at the office, they could contact me. As a result, they started talking to me more freely than ever. Often in-person meetings prevent people from speaking openly and honestly.
Skype talks with my employees during the weekend improved my communication strategy. I recommend every woman entrepreneur who can’t receive calls after calls from her team takes the time to figure out which specific communication solves most of your problems.
Also, I also recommend drinking coffee with your team. Have a little fun with them. The better you communicate, the better chance of having a happy team.
