Last week, I wrote a post where I shared statistics from a survey conducted by American Express that revealed some interesting insight into what employees really want to get as gifts for Administrative Professionals Day, which occurs on April 22nd.
To help business owners, managers, entrepreneurs, and other business women recognize their assistants who they rely on to ensure their businesses run smoothly, American Express is offering FIVE $100 American Express Gift Cards to Women On Business readers!
How to Enter:
- To enter, leave a comment on this post answering this question: Who you would give a $100 American Express Gift Card to in honor of Administrative Professionals Day and why? Comments that do not answer the question will not be included in the drawing.
- Comments must be left on this post before 11:59pm on Saturday, April 25, 2009 (Eastern Time) to be entered into the drawing. One comment per email address please. Contest open to entrants with continental U.S. mailing addresses only.
- Each comment will be entered into a drawing, and five winners will be selected randomly from those entries. Each winner will receive ONE $100 American Express gift card.
- The winners will be contacted via email, so please be sure you leave a valid email address in your comment.
- The winners will be notified by April 27, 2009. If a winner does not respond with his or her mailing address within 72 hours of the notification email being sent, he or she forfeits the prize and an alternate winner will be selected (same guidelines apply).
- Each winner’s prize will be shipped after the mailing address is provided (prize ships directly from an American Express representative). Once the prize is claimed, the winner’s name will be announced on Women On Business.

I would give $100 to my mom. She is such a hard worker – She is a bank teller. Dealing with numerous people throughout the day is tough, but add on money & math, ugh, I would be cross eyed by noon, LOL! She is such a hard worker, she likes what she does and does it well. We all know the banks are hurting right now, but she does not let that effect how well she does her job.

I would give the gift card to my daughter, not only a very excellent administrative assistant at a prominent law firm but the mother of my grandson, a child that she waited over 10 years to have. Now she must work and be a mom and she is not a young mom but she is doing a great keeping up with a three year old and a difficult job and I’m so proud of her.
The receptionist/administrative assistant at our office who takes care of everything and everybody. She’s fabulous.
I would certainly gift the card to my partner, because like many small business owners she has to wear all 500 of Bartholomew’s Hats! I’ve been at my job for 22 years now and Fran has been the police department “secretary” for the past 10 years. She keeps track of supplies running low and makes sure you have what you need BEFORE you run out. There’s never a delay when you ask her to do something. She’s the official statistician for our department and her numbers are always dead on. She frequently takes on projects no one else wants to do and she does them quickly, accurately and always without complaint. She’s also the most pleasant woman I’ve ever met; she remembers everyone’s birthday and I love going into her office to see her “wall of fame” where she has photos of everyone’s children on her wall. She’s so much more than a secretary; she’s the wheel that keeps our department turning.

I would give it to a beautiful senior citizen receptionist that greets everyone with an infectious smile and warm hugs. She treats everyone as if they are one of her beloved children. Whether it’s the mailman delivering mail, the greasy mechanic in the service shop or the high strung car salesman on the lot, she listens to their stories, asks them about their families and shows concern if they’re feeling down. She even makes them brownies and Rice Krispie treats.
Little does anyone know, that this fabulous woman suffers from a severe case of utricular vertigo that is uncurable. Her days and nights are filled with the sensation of spinning or swaying constantly while she is simply standing or sitting. Nausea and headaches are just a couple of the symptoms. Anxiety of falling is her greatest detriment.
Despite all of this, she shows up to work dressed up, hair coiffed, and smelling lovely. She doesn’t complain, she doesn’t show signs of her sickness nor does she discuss it.
How do I know this? … She’s my amazing mother.
My husband. He’s the professional administrator for our family. He left a job in banking to stay home with our 2 young children and now he applies the most organized mind to keeping them happy and learning while maintaining our home.
For a job that earns no salary but requires endless patience and skill, $100 is the least I could offer.
I would give it to hubby so he can give it to his administrative assistant Melody. She is wonderful. She keeps everything running smoothly at this office thus keeping him happy. SHe is also a very sweet lady and has some wonderful little girls who I adore. I appreciate that she makes my hubby’s life easier at work.

She knows everyone in the county and we are rather new here, and when we ask her questions she either knows the answer or finds it for us, including going out of her way to do so. You just don’t get service like that today!
I would give the money to my daughter who amazes me with her professionalism, her sincerity and her ability to make all that she does look so easy. As an engineer, wife, and mother she has challenges to meet daily and she does so with grace.

From the day I stopped in as a perfect stranger from another department to follow up on something and she immediately took responsibility for dealing with the matter to today, 6 years later, when we are friends and colleagues she has never wavered. Her ethos is integrity, hard work and a sense of responsibility, far above and beyond the call of duty. She is a gem.

I would give the $100 to a nurses aide who works with us. The CNAs in the hospital are usually underpaid and more often than not underappreciated! They have a very dirty, thankless job and a good one is hard to find! They deserve more respect than they get – it takes all members of the healthcare team from CNAs to MDs to keep the healthcare system running and the patient well taken care of!

I’d have to say myself because without me, the entire office wouldn’t get insurance verifications done, no insurance payments would come to the office, in turn not paying my boss and the flow of money would come to a halt. Things would be very unorganized. Since no one else in the office I work at knows how to do my job, basically things would be backed up big time. Without me, they couldn’t function. I’m a very highly organized and efficient worker. Whatever gets put in my inbox, gets done that same day.
A good example of the above: Last week I called off as I had a really bad cold that just kicked the heck outta me and knocked me down big time. While I was gone, nothing got done (because they don’t know how to do it) and when I came back this week, there was a ton of stuff in my inbox. That same day, I got it all done except for one. Was very busy, well organized and very efficient on getting things done and accomplished.
Frankly, I’d rather do them myself anyway, then I know theyll get done properly.

I would give this to my mother- she is wedged in between caring for her elderly mother and two of her grandchildren- and tending to one of her sons who returned home at age 33. Poor woman- she deserves it!!

Administrative Professionals Day nominee would most likley be my Mother because she is the President of Genealogy Society in our town and she works hard helping everyone for free to find their familys. My instructor, who has been an AA for many years, is very deserving. She went beyond her duties as an instructor to make sure that each and every one of the members of my class achieved greatness. i would give the money to my sister who immediately called 911 recently after I went blank, couldn’t focus or move without feeling faint. She saved me from having a complegte stroke. She is very special and deserves something nice

She works for a large entertainment company in New York and is currently pursuing an MBA at New York University. I’ve been at my agency for over 15 years, at 3 separate locations. ‘Anita’ is the first secretary I’ve worked with who is a divine gift to our office. She always goes above and beyond, helping us with any extra or last minute work the management team throws at us. When we were short staffed for almost 6 months, she stepped up and helped us complete all the data entry that was required of us, without so much as one complaint. It’s a toss up who I would gift it to. My youngest sister and four daughters are being foreclosed on and most of their personal belongings were recently sold in a sheriff’s sale. My son’s wife kidnapped their baby and ran off, and so he needs a lot of monetary and emotional support right now. These are all wonderful, hardworking people who I care a lot about.

She had spent over 15 years with a title company, and was then oversees(husband stationed in Airforce in Germany)–and after having spent the 3 years there, the title company, when she returned refused to give her the 15 years due her–had to start over on page ONE getting all her pension and vacation time back, and was told she would not get any of it.

I would give the $100 gift card to my amazing mother. Not only does she have four different part time jobs (secretary at three different places, and a bartender), but she manages to take care of her two teenage children without ever complaining. She works all hours of the day, cooks, brings us to school and lacrosse practices, and brings us anywhere we want. I’m 18 and had to give my car to my father a couple of months ago, which left it up to me and my mother to share her car. My parents are divorced and both work all hours of the day and my mother especially has no time to herself. She would take me to both of my jobs, which sometimes took 30 minutes just to bring me to my job a couple towns over, and would miss her lunch break because of it. She never has any fun time and barely ever gets to hang out with friends because she is trying to support our family through the hard times. She is an inspiration and never complains and whenever my brother or I, or any of her friends complain about the littlest things, she talks to us about them and makes us feel better. It breaks my heart to see she works so hard and feels like she has nothing to show for it. When my brother will ask for $20 here and there a lot of the times she can’t give it to him, and that’s the ONLY time she gets emotional because she feels she can’t give her children everything they want. She’s never bitter, never feels sorry for herself and is my own personal hero and I love her with all of my heart. She’s an all around amazing mother and has to deal with complaints all day long from all her jobs, and I know just that alone would make me break down in tears. I can’t even say it enough that she is my hero and is an inspiration to many people including myself.
