Guest post from Alice Krause of News on Women. You can learn more about Alice at the end of the post.
I am surprised every day to see how unfamiliar people are with the accomplishments of women in business. I wonder how many of the women I post about on NewsonWomen.com you have actually heard of. Don’t worry – you are not alone, I’ve never heard of half of them myself.
Some are familiar. We all know Oprah Winfrey, but do we know Maria Grasso who was just made a Senior Vice President of the Oprah Winfrey Network? You know her work if not her name if you’ve ever watched "Army Wives" or "One Tree Hill". I am sure you know Martha Stewart, but do you know Gail Horwood who was recently made Senior Vice President of Digital Programming and Strategy for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia? And then there’s Dawn Zier, recently made President of Global Consumer Marketing of Reader’s Digest. Reader’s Digest is a household name, but did you know its CEO is a woman – Mary Berner?
I love reading about these women, where they worked, what they’ve done before. I just wish more people knew about them. Take it on yourself to learn about what women are in the news. Test your friends. How many women executives can they name? I tested my friend at lunch and she came up with seven. It’s not easy to think of them when put on the spot. So she now holds the record. Come to newsonwomen.com and tell me if you or your friends thought of more without checking. We’ll call the game "Finding Women in Business" – (FWiB). Play FWiB and I’ll publish the record holder, and give credit to whoever spreads the word. How can women get better jobs if no one knows who they are?
