Sometimes, I speak to people who have dabbled at entrepreneurship and when you ask them why they did not succeed, they start to tell me about all the reasons why someone else is responsible for their failure and I listen in quietly.
On the other hand, some days I speak to business owners who are building a team and trying to accelerate the growth of that team and they are caught up in trying to baby their new team members. They are chasing them, driving across the country for them, doing presentations for them, inviting them to training, picking them up, and all kinds of things as they try to be the best leader in the world and support their new employees.
And I see this with coaches as well and basically anyone who walks alongside other people and tries to help them be successful. They try so hard to baby people into success but the is the thing… you can’t!
Chances are, the people you are trying hard to baby to success are the very people talking to me about how their boss doesn’t help them or how they tried coaching once and it didn’t work for them and how it is everyone else’s fault except their own.
And the problem is that they just do not see they are making a massive mistake. They do not see that they are the common factor in all the problems they claim to have. They go from situation to situation, opportunity to opportunity, job to job, and in every single one of those situations, they do not create success.
AND it is ALWAYS someone else’s fault!
I mean seriously – Can they not see that the common factor is THEM?
And yet they don’t. They want everything handed to them on a platter with no work, no persistence, no consistency. They are just looking for the easy button, and you are enabling it by trying to make them feel good and successful with no effort from them.
If you are a business owner, you need to let your team members (new and old) come and find you if they want your help. YOU need to focus on building your own business.
By all means, create training for new members and tell them where it is…
By all means, create a culture around your team so everyone feels that they are part of something…
But do not stop building your own business to baby other people who refuse to take responsibility for themselves.
You get on and keep doing the work. Stay on course, stay on track and your business cannot help but grow.
